At that point he held the rank of SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Waffen-SS, alongside wearing the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves; his final role was as the commander of the 12. SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend.

His history has been charted in this book with the direct input of those that served under his various commands, which include his Adjutant, First Staff Officer, Regimental Commander, Platoon Commanders, NCOs and Grenadiers. With their help, we detail how his career developed, the challenges he faced and the accomplishments he achieved, all of which helped to create his reputation, as well as how his leadership played a part in forging the reputation of the Waffen-SS during the Second World War.
This project is aimed at providing as comprehensive an insight as possible into this soldier, one who left his mark on the men that served with him, and one who paid the ultimate price for his country during the Third Reich era.
